Observations, musings and rubbish from the mind of an IVO (International Voice Over)

Don’t get me started…

Social Media. Technology. The 21st Century. I was reading somewhere that one of the worst things you can do first thing in the morning is to check your ’phone, tablet or computer, even if, like me, you work almost exclusively from one of the aforementioned devices. The irony is, although I can’t actually remember where I read the article, there’s a good chance it appeared via some pop-up – on... View Article

Observations from afar…

So I’ve just flown back from 4 weeks in Australia (insert “and boy are my arms tired” joke here). The “tour” was for a combination of reasons – family, friends and work – and it took me from London to Perth, around many Perth suburbs, to Melbourne, its suburbs and the country town of Castlemaine, back to Perth (more suburbs) and finally, somewhat wearily, back to London. From the family/friends... View Article

Australia

Australia – not so much of a holiday… So here I am, getting ready to hop on a non-stop 16-hour flight to Australia, with the purpose of visiting family and friends I haven’t seen or spoken to very much since my last trip down under in July 2018. That and trying to clear 30+ years of memories, memorabilia and some clothes (which should probably be in a museum) from a... View Article

World Population Clock

The Current World Population Clock…   Last Blog, I mentioned that I’d stumbled across the online “Current World Population Clock” – https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/ – and, having done so, I think I’d like to find a way to un-stumble-upon-it! There’s no point me relating all the facts and figures ticking over on this morbidly fascinating algorithm, because the numbers change so fast and frequently, by the time I’ve only begun to write... What day is it?

Sometimes, I really do, do, that old cliche’d thing and lose track of what day – or month, year or even decade – it is. Is this old age creeping up on me? My legendary 3 nano-second attention span? A result of listening to far too much rock over the past 50 something years? Nope – I think I have what I call “what’s next-i-tis”. Allow me to... Bite/Byte Sized…

For this blog, I thought I’d write something without editing it in any way to see what happened. Because life really is too short to edit the sh*t out of it, huh? So this’ll be something like a voice-over ‘stream of consciousness’ as opposed to anything to do with trying to ‘get myself into favour’ with our lord Google or any other search engine, or to boost my SEO... Where does my voice ‘go’ – and why can’t I remember the scripts I’ve read?!

Feel free to read the full blog below or let Greg, the best male voiceover artist in the UK (probably), read it to you…   I sometimes have no idea where anything I’ve voiced might eventually end up. Which sounds really odd considering that usually, at the very least, there’s the name of the client, product or service on the script somewhere (but not always), maybe some dates, times, places, a catchphrase, strap-line,... So, your voice-over is about to read your script…

You may have been writing, crafting and editing the documentary, narrative, e-learning module, on-hold messages/IVR’s (Interactive Voice Responses), explainer or commercial for the voice-over you’ve booked for some time. You’ve probably ‘lived’ with the idea, concept, format and content for perhaps days, weeks or even months, going over and over it to ensure the text says just what you want it say, whether it’s to sell, explain, entertain or extol... You’ve found your voice-over – now what?

You know what you want to say. You’ve located the definitive voice-over artist you need to read your text, and you’ve decided you want to book them. Should you do so via an online agency they might be registered with? Or is it better to deal direct? There are several different schools of thought for clients wishing to engage a voice-over to read their script… Online Agency Most online agencies... View Article

Am I any good?

Well, am I? I often ask myself, how do I actually know that all the scripts and words I voice for clients – from the likes of the BBC to Fred’s Fish Shop – make me a “good” voice-over? In my 30+ years’ experience in this biz, rarely has any agency person, booking person or client contacted me post-session/recording to say they “really liked what I did”. Or... View Article
