Observations, musings and rubbish from the mind of an IVO (International Voice Over)

Sir Bedivere…

Once in a while, I get to voice something which isn’t a script explaining how something works,  why you need a certain product or service, how best to operate a piece of machinery, what to learn or how to do something and so forth. This “once in a while” happened recently when I stood in front of the microphone for a couple of hours exalting various groans, grunts and battle... View Article

Always look on the bright side?

Terry Jones, one of my many comedy heroes, passed away in January. Kirk Douglas, one of my Dad’s heroes, went early February. These are but two of the hundreds of what Wikipedia terms “notable individuals” who shuffled off this mortal coil over the first 6 weeks of 2020. Terry and Kirk are just a couple of names on a list which, over only a few days, includes journalists, a cartoonist,... View Article

New Year, Old Favourite Things…

So here we go into not only a new year but a new decade. Decade #3 of the 21st Century to be precise. I’ve been blogging for more than half of the last year of the last decade because that’s what my SEO person said I must do to maximise my Search Engine Optimisation capabilities. I have no idea what that means! But I think it’s something to do with... View Article

So, this is Christmas…

…and what have you done? Maybe the opening line to the classic John Lennon song should actually go “and what have WE done?”. For this little old voice-over, Christmas is a time for reflection – reflection on what I’ve done, work-wise and on the personal front over the past year, what I was doing and where I was this time last year and then, I usually ask myself the question... Random blog…

Disappointment is probably my single, biggest nemesis. Frustration and Regret arrive closely in a tie for 2nd and 3rd place in a “trifecta” of sorts. As a voice-over, D (Disappointment) and F (Frustration) play a major role in my day-to-day existence, and that’s just fine because it’s the nature of the beast. Clients instruct their agencies to come up with a concept, write a script, possibly choose some music or... View Article

Don’t get me started…

Social Media. Technology. The 21st Century. I was reading somewhere that one of the worst things you can do first thing in the morning is to check your ’phone, tablet or computer, even if, like me, you work almost exclusively from one of the aforementioned devices. The irony is, although I can’t actually remember where I read the article, there’s a good chance it appeared via some pop-up – on... View Article

Observations from afar…

So I’ve just flown back from 4 weeks in Australia (insert “and boy are my arms tired” joke here). The “tour” was for a combination of reasons – family, friends and work – and it took me from London to Perth, around many Perth suburbs, to Melbourne, its suburbs and the country town of Castlemaine, back to Perth (more suburbs) and finally, somewhat wearily, back to London. From the family/friends... View Article

Australia

Australia – not so much of a holiday… So here I am, getting ready to hop on a non-stop 16-hour flight to Australia, with the purpose of visiting family and friends I haven’t seen or spoken to very much since my last trip down under in July 2018. That and trying to clear 30+ years of memories, memorabilia and some clothes (which should probably be in a museum) from a... View Article

World Population Clock

The Current World Population Clock…   Last Blog, I mentioned that I’d stumbled across the online “Current World Population Clock” – https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/ – and, having done so, I think I’d like to find a way to un-stumble-upon-it! There’s no point me relating all the facts and figures ticking over on this morbidly fascinating algorithm, because the numbers change so fast and frequently, by the time I’ve only begun to write... What day is it?

Sometimes, I really do, do, that old cliche’d thing and lose track of what day – or month, year or even decade – it is. Is this old age creeping up on me? My legendary 3 nano-second attention span? A result of listening to far too much rock over the past 50 something years? Nope – I think I have what I call “what’s next-i-tis”. Allow me to...
